Opening of 1408

00:14 - Black screen with contrasting white simple text. Non-diagetic background sound of rumbling suggesting horror.

00:28 - Fades into first shot. Its an extreme long shot which establishes the scene showing a long road with a car in the distance at night with heavy rain and thunder, a stereotypical location for a horror. The weather represents the the mood and tone of the film at this current point in time which is called Pathetic Fallacy. The location looks deserted suggesting there is no where to run.

00:30 - The camera starts to pan to face the car directly which is approaching slowly. Credits appear giving us a name of one of the actors in the film.

00:40 - The car comes straight up to the camera and stops, the camera has stopped panning and the title of the film appears "1408" in a white ghostly font suggesting the genre of the film.

00:45 - The shot cuts to a new position of the car while it starts to reverse connoting confusion. The high angle of the shot makes the car and the driver inside look vulnerable to the surroundings.

00:49 - The shot changes to a medium shot of the driver. We hear through the car radio as diagetic sound the words "Open from the gates of hell".

00:56 - Camera changes to a POV from the diver's perspective showing a sign saying "You are now leaving Fairfield County, please come back". The sign could be interpreted as a warning for the driver to leave soon as.

01:02 - The camera changes back to medium shot of the driver as he pulls out the prop of a map showing he is lost. Actors names are still appearing on screen.

01:09 - Extreme close up shot on tire to show its importance as the car turns around. Audience have now been made aware that something will involve the tires of the car.

01:15 - Another actors name appears. The location changes as the car now pulls up at a inn. The scene has low key lighting and the house is surrounding by trees showing isolation.

01:25 - The male character crosses a bridge heading towards the inn. The long high angle shot makes him look vulnerable. Low key lighting continues. The bridge suggests there is only way in and only one way out. The inn looks surrounded and the weather continues to worsen.

01:30 - We now see the house close up and see the male actor approach the inn. The shot seems to be a POV from another persons perspective stalking the male character. Low key lighting continues with old street lamps adding to the atmospheric tension.

01:38 - Scene changes to be inside the inn. The mise-en-sence has completely changed. There is high key lighting with bright vibrant colours including greens connoting peace and harmony. Although decor and furniture looks dated and doesn't match the modern look that the rest of film has shown so far.

01:52 - Inn owners now appear and welcome male driver. The two new characters look friendly and innocent. The shot shows more of the house looking old and dated.

02:02 - A discussion starts over a room using shot reverse shots. A key line is said which alerts the audience and creates tension. "You will probably want to know about our haunted history". The audience are now aware that this is the setting for the rest of the film and troubles are going to occur here. Although still, the high key lighting the speech from the male driver do not fit the stereotypical aspects for a horror.
